La Decima Vittima

The film “La Decima Vittima” or “The Tenth Victim” was directed by Elio Petri and released in 1965. If it was quite an unusual film which also sparked a new type of game that was played students in many university campuses.

The film is based in a future society where contract killings are legal and considered an actual profession. Additionally, those who were the best at were also treated like celebrities. People would be able to register for this profession and they would then be given the name and picture of their target and they would have to kill them. However, all of the targets given were other participants so everyone would be both a hunter and the prey.

This film led to an explosion of a new genre of pervasive games that was played by students on many different university campuses, assassination games. One popular assassination game is called “Killer” which follows a similar structure where all players are both hunters and being hunted. However, players do not actually kill each other but can use various other non-harmful weapons such as Nerf guns and water balloons.
